Design problem:
The gymnastic stretch ladder are bulky and inconvenient to carry to the gym facility and thus there is a necessity to make a lightweight, compact and portable product.
Redesigned a stretch ladder for young gymnast of age between 10 yrs - 12 yrs with following features:
-
Under 50 lbs of overall weight and stable structure made of material other than wood.
-
Collapses to a compact size of 4" x 6" x 18" from an original size of 4" x 18" x 37.5".

Ideated and brainstormed for various collapsible designs as shown below:

My ideated mechanism and design research:
-
Given the right resources and third party manufacturer proposed design would have resulted in the most compact shape for stretch ladder as shown besides.
-
Dual telescopic action with market research for different types of locking mechanism for telescopic tubes as shown below.

Two Final Designs:
3D MODEL
-
Dual Folding Design with 1/8th" wall thickness hollow square tubes of Aluminum 6061.
-
Horizontal telescopic Design with 1/8th" wall thickness round tubes.

Dual Folding Configurations:
Horizontal telescopic configuration:

Outcome & Future Work:
-
Plastic tubing with living hinges,
-
Hygienic, easy to replace padding at the horizontal members.
-
Avoiding pinch points near folding hinges by using protective sleeves and rubber caps at exposed edges to make it child friendly device.
